I am curious about simple remote starters, for both my '83 240DL and '13 GTI 6sp. Anyone here have experience with anything like that? Main purpose would be to get the climate control working ahead of getting into the car. Major props if I can control other stuff too, like maybe windows or locks.

It's a pretty simple concept, I've installed a few basic ones. Most shops won't install one on manual cars, I believe there are actually laws against it. And unless you're a very remember-full person, it might be a good idea to skip it on the 6sp. If you're used to leaving the car in gear, starting it remotely can end very badly.

I've had them on a few vehicles (all manual) and never had a problem. I also had floor parking brakes on most so I just kept the car running and in Neutral, took my foot off the clutch and put the brake on before shutting it down. With a console E-brake it might be a little harder. I do know plenty of friends that 'drove' their car through their garage. So be careful with that and always have eyes on your car when remote starting it.

I know remote starters are a pain in the ass for manual cars. I got one installed in the wife's minivan for about 185 it would have been close to 400 for may 6-speed Mazda
